THE CAPITAL OF FARS PROVINCE

Overview

Fars is one of the southern provinces in Iran that is really popular among the tourist destinations for both foreign and local travelers, because of its several historical, natural and religious attractions.

The name shiraz, has first mentioned on the Ealaami clay tablets some 2000 years B.C., in June 1970 while digging in order to make a Brick Kiln in the south west corner of the town. In the old Ealaam, clay tablets refer to a city called Tizaaris. Tiraasis or Siraasis, this name has taken from the name Siraajis in the Old Persian and due to regular phonological changes in modern Persian it has been changed to Shiraz. The name, Shiraz, has been seen on the ancient tablets in Sasanian era in the second century A.D. According to some native writers, considering Shaah naameh, Shiraz has been derived from the name of the third son of Shah Jahan, Tahmoores. Shiraz is known as the city of poetry in Iran. Among the famous female poet of Iran we can name Jahan Malek khatoon, who lived in Shiraz. Shiraz is known as the city of poetry, gardens and flowers. In Iranian culture, garden has a really special importance and Shiraz has been always well known because of its bountiful beautiful gardens.

In the year 2017 census the population of Fars province declared, 4,851,272 people, the cities Shiraz, Marvdasht, Kazeroon and Jahrom declared as four most populated cities and Pasargad declared as the less populated city in this province.


Geography


Shiraz, the capital of Fars Province with a length of 40 km and width varies between 15 and 30 km with an area of 1268 square kilometers, rectangular and geographically in southwestern Iran in the central part of Fars. High surrounding mountains, which surround the city, are particularly important in terms of strategic support of the city. The city from the West is limited to the Drake Mountains, from the north to the mountain Bamou, clad, Chhlmqam and Babakuh (the Zagros Mountains).

 


Climate


Shiraz is in the South West of the country and its climate is Mediterranean. The average temperature in July (the hottest month) is 30 ° C, in January (the coldest month), 5 degrees Celsius, 17 degrees Celsius in April and in October is 20 degrees Celsius and the average annual temperature is 18 degrees Celsius. The Average annual precipitation of Shiraz is 337. 8 mm.

 


Language and accent


In Shiraz, people talk Persian with shirazi accent.

[Shiraz , Shirazi = England , English]. Shirazi accent has 23 consonants /P/ , /b/ , /f/ , /v/ , /t/ , /d/ , /k/ , /g/ , /q/ , /c/ , /j/ , /s/ , /z/ , /s/ , /z/ , /m/ , /n/ , /l/ , /r/ , /h/ , /x/ , /?/ , /y/ , 9 simple vowels /a/ , /a:/ , /e/ , /e:/ , /o/ , /o:/ , /a/ , /i/ , /u/ and 5 Diphthongs /y/ , /ay/ , /ou/ , /ey/ , /ow/  and its Syllable structure is cvc(c).  A Research on the present situation shows that shirazi accent is more popular and acceptable among the old people of Shiraz than the young people, and young people are not even familiar with this accent enough.

The most important thing about the Shirazi accent is that they add و” [ that pronounces “/u:/”]  at the end of the names and it acts as a definite article, in fact it has the same role as “the” in English language.

 


Religion


The religion of the majority of the people of Shiraz is Islam. During the second half of twentieth century most of the Jewish emigrated to Israel and America. There are still some 6000 Jewish in shiraz. Now in Shiraz there are two active churches that one of them belongs to the Armenians and the other one is owned by the Anglican Church. 

 


Culture


Shiraz is known as the city of poetry in Iran. Among the famous lady poet of Iran we can name Jahan Malek khatoon, who lived in Shiraz. Shiraz is known as the city of poetry, garden and flowers. In Iranian culture, garden has a really special importance and Shiraz has been always well known because of its bountiful gardens. Now a days most of these gardens are in the north west of Shiraz and in Ghasre dasht , koshan, chamran and maali abaad. Some of the gardens of Shiraz are historically really important and they are considered as significant tourism centers. The most famous gardens are as below: Baghe Eram (Eram garden), baghe Afif abaad, baghe Delgosha, baghe jahaan nama. Shiraz was the place of Shiraz art festival from 1968 to 11978. At that time this festival was one of the most important cultural events in the world. The reason of holding such festivals was the improvement and encouragement of the traditional art of Iran and improving the cultural standards of Iran.
